School Nurse
St. Mark’s seeks an organized registered nurse to serve as its School Nurse. The School Nurse promotes and protects the optimal health status of school-age children, including physical, mental, emotional, and social growth and development. The School Nurse is responsible for nursing care of students, managing and reporting student health records, promoting healthy practices, maintaining first aid supplies, organizing vaccine clinics, and sharing recommendations from state and federal authorities.
Duties:
- Assesses severity and provides nursing care for students with injuries and illnesses.
- Distributes appropriate daily, as-needed, and emergency medications to students.
- Cares for students with chronic conditions such as asthma, allergies/anaphylaxis, diabetes, and epilepsy/seizures, and works with faculty to ensure a safe learning environment.
- Works with the School Counselor to provide mental health support to students in need.
- Promotes healthy practices and assists in the control of communicable diseases, including organization of an annual immunization clinic.
- Manages student health records in our electronic medical record system.
- Ensures all students are up to date on their required immunizations.
- Provides health assessments through screening evaluations and observations.
- Collects health data and reports to local and state officials when required.
- Provides health education, anticipatory guidance, and connections to outside health resources.
- Maintains first aid and emergency medical supplies.
- Serves as a resource for health education in the classroom.
- Collaborates with School administration to implement systems for optimal safety and wellness.
Required Skills and Experience:
- A bachelor’s degree in nursing
- A current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Texas
- Five-plus years of experience, preferably in pediatrics
- A joyous approach to working with students aged 18 months through 8th grade
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
- This is a 12-month position with hours of 10:00 AM until 6:00 PM.
- Works in a sometimes highly stressful environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges.
- Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time.
- Physical agility to lift up to 50 pounds; to bend, stoop, and reach overhead.
- Works primarily in a traditional climate controlled office environment with occasional outside work.
